The Complete Process of the Making of Handwoven Rugs

For many centuries now, rugs and carpets have been used by patrons as clothes and to adorn floors. Tribal shepherds were the first to use rugs and carpets, first, as heavy clothes to shield them from inclement weather and progressively as floor coverings using – handwoven area rugs –, once they started living in settlements. Rug makers have over the centuries developed intricate techniques to weave spectacularly beautiful patterns and transformed rug making into fine art. Even today, the process of rug-making has mostly remained the same; though nowadays, they are made by both hand and machine.

Authentic handmade rugs and carpets epitomize a unique and timeworn craft. Handmade rugs and carpets have certain traits that render them far superior to machine-made specimens even if their design patterns look the same. Conventionally, luxury handmade rugs and carpets are much costlier than similar machine-made examples. Every luxury handmade rug is unique and the final result depends on numerous factors that affect the process of making rugs by hand. This ensures that every luxury handmade rug has its distinctive personality and presence. This individuality is something that even the finest machine-made rugs cannot equal. For connoisseurs of rugs, only handmade artifacts will suffice, even at great expense. Luxury handmade rugs can even take months to produce. This is partly the reason why luxury handmade rugs are so expensive.

The complete process of making handwoven rugs from natural wool to the completed rug involves the following steps:

1. Unprocessed wool is turned into yarn:

Wool is considered the chief and most popular material for making rugs. As a raw material for luxury handmade rugs, wool is strong, soft, long-lasting, and beautiful. When the wool reaches the handmade rug-making workshop, it is processed by hand to break up the clumps and remove any foreign materials stuck in it. Then, an apparatus is used to pull it into individual strands. These strands are then spun into yarn, traditionally done on rudimentary spinning wheels.

2. The resultant yarn is washed:

The yarn is washed thoroughly to remove the grease and dust. This process involves immersing it into a detergent bath, scrunching it out several times, and then washing it in clean water to scour it of detergents. This washed yarn is dried under the sun for a few days.

3. The yarn is dyed:

Dyes are created using a combination of natural and synthetic elements to produce the desired hue. The washed yarn is suspended on a rack and submerged in a dye. The yarn needs to be heated to boiling temperatures for a specific period. This allows the dye to work its way into the yarn. The longer the time it is submerged in the dye, the darker the hue. The dyed yarn is then hung out in the sun to dry off.

4. The carpet is woven:

Once the dye dries out, it is ready to be woven into a carpet. There are essentially three ways to weave a rug: knotting, tufting, and hooking.

Knotting involves an artist who draws a design on the rug on a particular graph paper. Then, a frame is prepared - this is done by stretching columns of thread called warps vertically down the loom. These warps are customarily made of cotton. The artisan then weaves the yarn knot-by-knot on the loom using a traditional knotting method such as the Turkish knot, Persian knot, and Tibetan knot.

Tufting starts with the drawing of a pattern on a chief backing material using stencils. The backing material – which is usually made of cotton – is attached to a frame. The artisan then inserts tufts of wool into the backing material using a tufting tool. The chief backing material is then covered with latex and secondary backing material is added. The resultant surface loop pile is cut to create a flat surface with a dense pile.

Hooking involves choosing the design, pattern, and colors – typically from other carpets and pictures – the artisans weave the rug using a scaffolding system that allows them to raise or lower their position along the entire length of the rug. They utilize a specialized tool to push the yarn back and forth along a cotton backing. Hooking is the easiest and least expensive way of making luxury handmade rugs.

5. The rug is properly washed and dried:

The result of the above steps is thoroughly washed to remove dirt, detergent, and yarn motes. In the washing process, the rug is laid on a flat surface and clean water is poured over it. Wood planks with sharp edges are used to force the water out of the rug.

As we can infer, the process of making luxury handmade rugs is a time-consuming and labor-intensive one. It can take several weeks to months to make such rugs. Nonetheless, for patrons of luxury handmade rugs, the resulting works of art are worth the trouble.
